Pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) can be a significant financial burden for many students. To ensure that deserving and underprivileged students get access to quality higher education, the Government of India has introduced several schemes and scholarships. These initiatives aim to support students from economically weaker sections, backward classes, and meritorious candidates by providing financial aid, fee waivers, and scholarships. Below is a detailed list of government schemes that help students pursue an MBA degree at little to no cost.
Detailed Overview of Government Schemes for Free MBA Education
The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a central platform that consolidates multiple scholarships offered by different government departments for students across India. Through NSP, students can apply for various financial assistance programs designed to support economically weaker sections, SC/ST/OBC categories, and meritorious students.
The Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships (CSSS) is a government program aimed at facilitating academically meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections to pursue higher studies. This scheme is executed by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, to offer financial help to students who have performed exceptionally well in their Class 12 board exams and want to take admission in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including professional courses such as MBA.
Under this scheme, chosen students are given ₹10,000 annually for the initial three years of undergraduate study and ₹20,000 annually for postgraduate study. The scholarship is meant to alleviate financial constraints and motivate students to pursue higher studies without economic anxiety.
The Pragati Scholarship is designed to encourage female students to pursue technical and professional courses, including an MBA, by providing financial assistance.
AICTE Saksham Scholarship is a government-run program that seeks to empower disabled students by giving them financial aid for pursuing higher studies. It is a program run by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) that is meant for students who seek to pursue professional courses, such as an MBA, in AICTE-approved colleges in India.
As part of this program, differently-abled students suffering from a 40% disability or above qualify for a scholarship of ₹50,000 yearly. This provides for tuition costs, buying learning materials, as well as additional academic-related charges. The student is given this scholarship for the full course, subject to continued satisfactory academic work.
To be considered for the scholarship, students should have gained admission into a degree-course technical program on the basis of a centralized admissions process and must come from an annual income less than ₹8 lakh. It is a merit-based selection procedure, and forms can be applied for through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
AICTE Saksham Scholarship serves an important function to ensure inclusiveness and level-playing field opportunities for higher education, so that disabled students do not face financial hindrances to achieving their educational and professional goals.
The Dr. Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme provides financial aid to SC and OBC students pursuing postgraduate degrees, including MBA.
This scholarship, introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC), aims to promote higher education among students from the North-Eastern states.
Eligibility:
Must be a domicile of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, or Tripura.
Family income must be below ₹4.5 lakh per annum.
Should have taken admission in a recognized MBA program.
Benefits: ₹7,800 per month for the duration of the course.

This scheme allows SC and ST students to pursue an MBA and other professional courses abroad. It covers tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs.
Many state governments provide merit-based scholarships to students pursuing Online MBA Degrees. These scholarships are often tailored to local students and cater to specific socio-economic backgrounds.
The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) offers scholarships to students from underprivileged backgrounds pursuing higher education.
This scheme benefits the children of ex-servicemen and defense personnel pursuing higher education.
Applying for government scholarships requires careful attention to eligibility criteria, documentation, and deadlines. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for these schemes:
These government schemes play a crucial role in making MBA education accessible to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
