Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College was founded in 1985 by the Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust, which sought to advance education and effect change. In 1988, the Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was established within three years of its founding, and in 1991, the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was launched. In 2003, both colleges were granted Deemed University status as Dr. MGR Educational Research Institute by the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi, and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
